# Why did I get fewer sequence ideas than expected?

> A sequence-idea run came back short; ideas are dropped when their signal is unavailable or a name cannot be matched, and the run still reports success.

**Ideas are dropped silently along the way and the run still reports success. The main reason is an idea built on a buying signal that is not available on your account; the whole idea goes rather than the signal. Industry and technology names that cannot be matched to known values are dropped too, which can leave an idea that arrives incomplete and refuses to launch. Runs are also limited per billing month by plan.**

## Quick fix

1. Check which buying signals are available on your account. Any idea that needed one you do not have was discarded whole.
2. Open each idea that did arrive and look for empty required fields before trying to launch it.
3. If an idea has no contact source, check its search filters; some targeting arrives as a filter rather than a source.
4. Check how many runs you have used this billing month. Your plan decides how many you get.
5. Run it again on the same company. Repeat runs deliberately try different angles, so a second pass often returns ideas the first did not.

## Symptom

You supplied a company name and website and waited. Reply read the site and, after **roughly half an hour to an hour**, notified you that the run was finished. The ideas that arrived are complete (each with its audience, pain points, value proposition, call to action, playbook and pre-filled search filters) there are fewer of them than you were expecting. Nothing explains the shortfall.

## The four reasons the count comes up short

| Cause | What it looks like afterwards |
| --- | --- |
| An idea needed a buying signal you do not have | Fewer ideas, no explanation, run reported as successful |
| An industry or technology name could not be matched | An idea arrives with a required field empty and will not launch |
| A described audience could not be turned into real profiles | An idea arrives with no contact source attached |
| The monthly run allowance is used up | The run does not start at all |

### 1. An idea relied on a buying signal that is not available to you

This is the main reason a run comes back short. When an idea's contact source depends on a signal your account does not have, the idea is not rebuilt around something else and it is not reported; **the whole idea is discarded**, and the run still finishes as a success.

**How to recognize it:** the run completed cleanly, the ideas that arrived are good, and the list is shorter than promised. Nothing anywhere mentions a signal.

**What to do:** look at which buying signals your account has. That tells you which kinds of idea are reachable for you at all, and it is the fastest way to predict what a re-run will produce.

### 2. An industry or technology name could not be matched

The generator writes these fields as free text, which then has to be matched against the values Reply recognizes. Anything that does not match is dropped rather than approximated.

That matters because these can be required. An idea whose industry was dropped arrives with a gap in it, looks complete at a glance, and refuses to launch when you try.

**How to recognize it:** the idea is present but will not launch, and a required field on it is empty.

**What to do:** fill the field in yourself by picking a value from the list. It is usually one selection, and the rest of the idea is intact.

### 3. A described audience could not be resolved into real profiles

Some signals need real profiles or pages behind them: an actual set of people or companies to watch, not a description of them. Where a described audience cannot be resolved into those, the signal is dropped and the sequence ships **without a contact source**.

**How to recognize it:** the idea launched or is ready to launch, but nobody is being sourced into it.

**What to do:** attach a contact source by hand. Before you do, read the section below; the source may not be missing at all.

### 4. You have used your runs for the month

Runs are limited per billing month, and the number is set by your plan. When the allowance is gone the run does not start.

**How to recognize it:** you get no run at all, rather than a short one.

**What to do:** look at how far through the billing month you are. Your allowance and what you have used of it are shown against your plan.

## An idea with "no contact source" may be targeting through filters instead

Two of the signals people expect to see among the contact sources are applied as **search filters** instead. When one of those is what the idea is built on, the sequence looks like it has no source while the targeting is sitting in the filters, working exactly as intended.

Open the idea's search filters before you conclude anything is missing. If contacts genuinely are not arriving, [Why did a lead source add no contacts?](/troubleshooting/lead-source-added-no-contacts/) covers the reasons a source that does exist delivers nobody.

## FAQ

### How long does it take?

Roughly half an hour to an hour. Reply notifies you when it is finished, so there is no need to keep the page open.

### How many runs do I get?

A set number per billing month, decided by your plan. Your remaining runs are shown against your account rather than fixed for everyone.

### Why does a generated sequence have no contacts arriving?

Either the signal behind it was dropped because a described audience could not be resolved into real profiles, or the targeting is in the search filters rather than in a contact source. Check the filters first; that is the commoner of the two.

### Why will a generated sequence not launch?

Almost always a required field that arrived empty, because an industry or technology name could not be matched to a known value. Open the sequence and look for the gap.

- the company name and website you supplied
- roughly when the run finished, and your timezone
- how many ideas you expected and how many arrived
- for an idea that will not launch, which field is empty
